英特尔深圳公司的Jason Kang、Lisa Liao带着团队,开发了一款Thunderbolt? 3 M.2 Add in Card,帮助许多中国本土电脑厂商成功引入了当下最先进的计算机接口Thunderbolt? 3。

或许你还不了解Thunderbolt? 3。它是由英特尔主导开发的USB-C接口,更是一线计算机品牌心目中的“宠儿”。苹果、联想、戴尔、惠普等公司已普遍采用Thunderbolt? 3。特别是苹果的MacBook Pro,甚至只保留Thunderbolt? 3,彻底摈弃其他数据接口。

Thunderbolt? 3拥有前所未有的速度和性能。这个“飞毛腿”的数据传输速度是普遍使用的USB3.0的8倍,在不到30秒的时间内就能传输一部4K影片,5分钟就可以备份你一整年的MP3文件。

Thunderbolt? 3是USB-C接口中的“战斗机”,可以同时连接两台4K显示屏,如果连接外接显卡,还可以将一台轻量级笔记本电脑提升至专业游戏台式机的性能级别。

过去4年间,Thunderbolt?的市场份额增长了两倍,但在市场推广上依然遇到了“瓶颈”。因为它“飞”一般的数据传输速度提高了计算机的设计难度,让一些国内的计算机厂商望而却步。除了屈指可数的几家国际领先企业,绝大多数本地厂家连硬件测试的第一个环节都无法通过。所以,仅提供设计指南、参考板卡的方式已远远无法满足这些企业的设计需求。只有借助外部的技术力量,才可能引入实力强大的Thunderbolt?。此外,Thunderbolt?的组织认证费用高、周期长,无形中提升了国内计算机厂商的成本。很多中国本土厂商眼见飞速增长的市场需求,却只能默默叹息。

Jason和Lisa在与客户的交流中发现了这些痛点。于是,他们决定利用英特尔的知识产权和开发经验,为计算机厂商设计一种Thunderbolt? 3的外接插卡。将技术最为复杂的部分预先集成在硬件系统中,只需轻松地把插卡接入,即可获得Thunderbolt? 3的全新特性。这一颠覆性的设计从根本上降低了技术门槛,大幅降低了设计难度。同时,插卡可以提前通过Thunderbolt?组织的统一认证,有效降低认证费用、减少认证时间,为Thunderbolt?的普及铺平了道路。

实际上,Thunderbolt? 3 M.2 Add in Card的开发过程并非一帆风顺。由于所需的液化电路板材质要求高、价格贵,Jason团队一开始难以实现产品的成本与性能的平衡。此时,Intel I2R内部创业项目认为Thunderbolt? 3 外插卡可以切实解决本土厂商面临的问题,决定支持项目的进一步开发,在I2R的帮助下Jason不仅找到了合适的供应商,还招聘了专业测试人员对产品进行兼容性测试,最终推动该产品顺利通过了Thunderbolt?组织认证。

目前,Jason和他的团队所开发的外接插卡已经被两家计算机厂商采用。其中,博本公司近期推出的G神GB03桌面主机就是Thunderbolt? 3外插卡的一次成功应用。

据悉,在即将举行的2018美国CES展上(2018年1月10日),博本将联合英特尔在拉斯维加斯展览中心对这款G神GB03桌面主机进行全球发布。届时博本公司总经理、研发总监等高管,以及英特尔Thunderbolt? 3总经理等高管,将莅临发布会现场,集体为这款新品打Call!

An add-in card that is smaller than two coins can solve a big problem for many computer manufacturers. That isn’t a myth, but a real story happening around us. Jason Kang, Lisa Liao and their team at Intel Shenzhen site developed Thunderbolt? 3 M.2 Add in Card, helping many Chinese local computer manufacturers to successfully introduce the most advanced computer port - Thunderbolt? 3.

You may not know Thunderbolt? 3. It is a USB-C type of cable developed by Intel and has broadly been welcomed by many major computer brands including Apple, Lenovo, Dell and HP. Especially, Apple MacBook Pro has exclusively adopted Thunderbolt? 3 and removed earlier generation of ports. That is due to the unprecedented speed and performance of Thunderbolt? 3. Its data transmission speed is 8 times of the generally used USB 3.0, equivalent to transmitting a 4K movie in less than 30 seconds or backing up your whole year of MP3 files within 5 minutes. It supports 4X video bandwidth than HDMI 1.4, and can connect two 4K monitors simultaneously. By connecting an external graphics card, it can transform the performance of a lightweight laptop to a professional gaming desktop. 

Although the market share of Thunderbolt? has increased two folds over the past 4 years, it encountered some bottleneck in expansion, in part due to its own success in high transmission speed that increases the complexity of computer design. Except for a few world leading companies, most local computer manufacturers cannot pass even the initial hardware testing. Therefore, merely providing design guidelines and reference boards can no longer meet their design demands. Only by extra technical assistance, can they incorporate such advanced port in their computers. In addition, the expensive and long certification process also drive up the computer manufacturers’ cost. In the fast-growing market, many domestic companies cannot do anything but sigh with reluctance.

Jason and Lisa found these customer pain points when communicating with them. They thought to leverage Intel’s IP and development experience to design a Thunderbolt? 3 add-in card for computer manufacturers. Jason and his team pre-integrate the most complicated technologies into the hardware system, so the latest Thunderbolt? 3 features can be available just by simply inserting the card. Therefore, this approach can fundamentally lower the technology barrier and reduce the design difficulty. Meanwhile, the card has been certified by Thunderbolt?, reducing the certification cost and time, which essentially solves the problem faced by local computer manufacturers.

Of course, the development of Thunderbolt? 3 M.2 add-in Card wasn’t smooth sailing. A special material used in the liquid circuit board requires top craftsmanship, and is therefore very expensive. It isn’t easy to find the right balance between cost and performance. I2R, the Intrapreneurship program of Intel China, thought Thunderbolt? 3 M.2 add-in Card can practically solve the problems that local computer manufacturers are faced with, so decided to accelerate this project. With I2R’s help, they succeeded to find an appropriate vendor, and hired professional testers to test the product compatibility, and ultimately win the Thunderbolt? certification.

At present, the add-in card developed by Jason and his team has been adopted by two local computer manufacturers. BBEN’s recent Desktop Host GB03 is one of the successes.

In the upcoming 2018 CES exhibition (January 10, 2018), BBEN will join Intel to launch the GB03 desktop host. BBEN general manager, r&d director and other senior executives, as well as Intel executives, will be at the event to endorse the product.
