【威廉写作轻课堂】Legal/Lawful/Licit/Statutory/Legitimate 傻傻不认识/傻傻分不清

上次在公开课讲到了Litigation/Lawsuit/Jurisdiction/Legislation 的辨析，今天再来一组之前威廉自己做学生的时候也傻傻不认识或分不清的词汇：

Legal/Lawful/Licit/Statutory/Legitimate

（不由感慨：如果威廉老师当年也有这么一个威廉老师该多好。

Legal

legal主要有两种用法

1.ADJ Legal is used to describe things that relate to the law. 法律（上）的，与法律有关的

legal service 法律服务

legal affairs 法律事务

legal procedure 法律程序

2.ADJ According or not contrary to law, permitted by law合法的；依法的；正当的

如：

legal claim合法主张；legal separation （夫妇）合法分居；legal title 合法所有权

Lawful

只有一种用法：

ADJ If an activity, organization, or product is lawful, it is allowed by law. 合法的

The detention of the fugitive was lawful.

对逃亡者的拘留是合法的。

Licit

A less common word for Lawful

licit 与lawful 意思相同，表示“合法的；依法的；正当的”，但使用频率远不及legal 和lawful高

Licit contract 合法合同

Statutory

ADJ Statutory means relating to rules or laws which have been formally written down. 规定的；法定的

The FCC has no statutory authority to regulate the Internet.

美国联邦通信委员会没有规范因特网的法定权力

statutory holiday 法定假日

statutory limitation 法定时效

statutory duty 法定责任

Legitimate

legitimate 在表示“合法、合理、正当”时，更注重合理和正当性，并非一定依据法律。

如：

legitimate rights and interests 合法权益

legitimate purpose 合理目的

legitimate measures 正当措施

legitimate income 合法收入

一句话辨析：有“法律上的”这层含义的是legal，其他的lawful、licit、legitimate都是合法的意思，而statutory是“法律明文规定的”的意思。

上述词汇的否定词：

illegal/illicit/unlawful

三者都可表示not in accordance or sanctioned by law，“非法的；不法的；不正当的”。除此之外，illicit还含有不道德的意思。如：illicit love affair 私通

legal的第一种意思并没有否定形式。

illicit的使用频率也远远高于licit。
